Des Moines Elementary School
Built on the former Zenith Park site, the new elementary will utilize a split-level design that utilizes the sloping terrain. The high performance educational environment will be healthy, inspiring, flexible, conducive to teaching and learning, and will be adaptable to future changes in program and technology. Classroom wings will be organized into six small learning communities. Each community will have a distinct entry providing access to groupings of five or six “home room” classrooms. Durable, low-maintenance materials will be incorporated throughout the building and site with minimal impact on the natural environment. Situated under SeaTac airport’s flight path, this campus will be built to meet stringent aircraft noise reduction requirements of both the City of Burien and the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol.
