Geiger’s site descends from east to west, opening to views of the Narrows and Puget Sound. Shared activity spaces are located adjacent to classrooms in pods to promote self-directed learning opportunities. The facility lends itself to sustainable learning through the learning gardens, a 5,000-gallon cistern for water reclamation, and a connection to the outdoors through natural daylighting throughout the school. Marine themes build individual identities for the six classroom pods, with each classroom having its own marine mascot. As one of two Montessori schools in Tacoma Public Schools, Geiger shifts away from the teacher-centered delivery system to emphasize student-centered exploration.
